A notable portion of the Columbia Trail is the Ken Lockwood Gorge, between Califon and High Bridge (2½ miles north of High Bridge). I suggest starting from the southern trail head if you plan to ride a full circuit. We're not talking big hills but there's lots of agressive riding. This bridge is impassable at the moment but is due to be refurbished the summer of 2008. Continue a couple more miles to Califon. The trail head in High Bridge was easy to find and in a nice area, so I felt fine locking-up and leaving the car there. First time riding this trail over Memorial Day weekend. The trail is well-maintained, the crushed stone is dry (even after rain) and easy on the feet, there are mile posts every quarter mile, and the scenery is beautiful. We rode unpaved trails in the past, but this one was the roughest we encountered. I rode this trail for the first time this past weekend. Talk about views stop on that trestle and enjoy the scene it is one of the most beautiful the state of New Jersey has to offer! A few short portions are asphalt and the bridges are generally concrete. The northern end of the trail is now at Bartley Road. Don't let this review prevent you from riding this wonderful and pretty trail. I did it from Long Valley down to High Bridge and back. The only other thing I would remark on is that there are two large trees that block the trail and require dragging your bike through. Take a few minutes to explore. If we had more time we would have joined the several swimmers observed bathing in the river below. As of 8/22/17 there is a trail closure approximately 3 miles north of High Bridge. Both Califon (at abut the 5 mile mark) and Long Valley (about the 11 mile mark) offer a place to take a break, grab a drink or snack or use a restroom (port-a-potty). I won't be back until I know that horses are no longer allowed on this trail. this trail always gets 5 stars - we ride it easily once or twice a year - never disappointed - we always start in high bridge and get to the 11 mile point - there's a trailhead/parking lot there and we could never find the supposed connection to the other 4 miles - but today we finally figured it out and since it is a little tricky (or maybe we get confused easy) - here's how it goes ...... cross that street into the other paved parking lot (very important there is a port a john hidden there) .......get on the crushed gravel trail that takes you around the housing development .... then you kind of hit a fork in the trail with no signs or directions .... left looks industrial, right looks woodsy ..... GO LEFT ..... you may want to walk it through this section, go around the concrete block that used to block the trail, go over the rusted steel bridge, and you'll re-pickup the trail right before the locked gate on the right (this little section is only about 0.1-0.2 miles) AFter that you have another 3.5 or so miles making this a 15 mile one way/30 mile round trip --- HAVE FUN. The entire trail is pretty straightforward; there are a few intersections where you have to look out for cars, but they aren't numerous. It starts at the free day parking lot. Unluckily after about mile 6 the horse poop becomes prolific (how about carrying a shovel folks?) This parking area is located just off Highway 176 just before it crosses the Columbia Canal. Use a trail bike. We rode it end-to-end and back - 30 miles - on a hot day and it was delightful. We saw plenty of people riding sports bikes and other bikes that didn't look like tough mountain bikes, but I wouldn't recommend it: we certainly won't attempt it again. The trail crosses the river on a high trestle, which, as of my last trip, was not completely improved but passable. The trail starts on your right across the road. The South Branch of the Raritan River parallels the trail through the gorge, and is a scenic fast-flowing small river with recreational activities, especially fly fishing.
